Publish Time: 2016-01-09 20:02:00
A presumable owner of USD 14-million-woth smuggled painting of Anthony Van Dyke discovered in Istanbul, Turkey on January 8, is found. Eka Abashidze, Georgian citizen claims that the painting belongs to her and has been kept in her family for 15 years. She paid USD 5 thousand in a commissioner’s shop in Tbilisi. The family then sold the painting in 2010 through a medieval person at USD 8 thousand, though the painting was estimated to cost USD 37 thousand. The person surnamed Huseinov promised the family to sell the painting in Turkey but disappeared to evade paying rest of the money. Abashidze identified the painting through released shots in the media. Two businesspersons are arrested in Turkey for smuggling USD 14-million-worth painting. According to the non-verified information, the stolen painting was subjected to expertise in Georgia at cost of USD 200 thousand and the medieval person between smugglers and the buyer was Georgian. The information that Turkish law-enforcers detained 2 Georgian businesspersons in attempt to sell the painting by a Flemish Baroque artist of the 17th century is not confirmed. The detainees told Turkish police that they had bought the painting at USD 2 thousand. Turkish media released shots how they seized the painting from a hotel. According to one of the versions, Georgia was merely used as a transit route from Russia via Turkey to Europe.
