The wine exhibition Georgia - The Cradle of Wine opened in the city of Bordeaux, France.Unique archaeological and ethnographic artifacts from the National Museum of Georgia proving that Georgia has an ancient wine civilization were presented at the Center of Wine Civilization- Cité des Civilisations Du Vin in Bordeaux, France.Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili opened an exhibition titled Georgia - Cradle of Wine in Georgia.National Museum of Georgia prepared the exposition that presents Georgian wine culture and depicts the longest and uninterrupted 8 000-year long history of wine-making.The head of the Government visited the exhibition hall.
Zurab Pololikashvili elected as UNWTO Secretary General

Zurab Pololikashvili has been elected as Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The UNWTO General Assembly unanimously supported the decision of the Executive Council of 12 May 2017 and appointed Zurab Pololikashvili to the position of UNWTO Secretary General.This is the first case when a candidate of Georgia occupies the position of the head of the international organization.The new Secretary General was elected at the 22nd session of the UNWTO General Assembly in China. The procedure was attended by Georgian Foreign Minister Mikhiel Janelidze.

Agriculture Tourism International Conference to open in Batumi

International Conference of Agriculture Tourism will be opened at Sheraton Hotel in Batumi city of Adjara region of Georgia on September 9. About 150 specialists from Georgia and 7 different countries will attend the 2-day conference. Invited guests will hold presentations, seminars and discussions about perspectives of agriculture tourism development. Georgian Prime Minister meets with EBRD President

Twenty-five years of cooperation between Georgia and EBRD, the country's ongoing project supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the four-point reform agenda of the Georgian Government were the key topics discussed at today's meeting between Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and EBRD President Suma Chakrabarti. The EBRD President, as part of his third visit to Georgia, was hosted today by the Prime Minister at the Administration of the Government.According to the press service of the Administration, the Head of Government thanked the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for its invaluable support, thanks to which more than 200 projects have been implemented and about 3 billion Euros have been invested in the country.The conversation during the meeting also involved the EBRD policy on Georgia, which, according to the parties, focuses on supporting the Government's four-point reform agenda seeking to ensure economic growth, the country's spatial planning, and reform the system of education and governance. Special attention was paid to Georgia's achievements in the implementation of institutional and structural reforms and its leading positions in various international ratings.The Prime Minister of Georgia spoke of the country's pension and capital market reforms, emphasizing that the pension reform will launch in the third quarter of 2018. At this point, necessary legislative amendments and relevant institutional and technical infrastructure are being prepared.Giorgi Kvirikashvili praises the issuance of GEL-denominated bonds by EBRD in international markets, which will support economic growth, the development of Georgia's stock market, and will attract investments.The parties also focused on the work of the Investors Council, a platform created with EBRD support, which incorporates active engagement from the private sector and seeks to discuss important issues concerning this sector. The council's meeting today, to be chaired by Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, will be attended by the EBRD President.

EBRD President visiting Georgia

Sir Suma Chakrabarti, President of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is visiting Georgia. Dimitri Kumsishvili, Finance Minister and First Vice Prime Minister hosted EBRD President at Tbilisi International Airport. Meetings with governmental members are planned within the framework of the visit. Chakrabarti will take part in the sitting of Investors’ Council. The EBRD carried out investment in the amount of USD 250 million in Georgia in 2016. The finances allocated to Georgia are estimated at 3 billion Euro.
Georgia’s President to take part in Economic Forum in Poland

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili will take part in the 27th Economic Forum, which will be organized by the Eastern Institute in Krynica-Zdrój, Poland, on September 5-7. According to Administration of the President, the first plenary session of the Forum will be held on September 5 and heads of states and representatives of governmental and parliamentary delegations, as well as business sector, of various countries will participate in it.Giorgi Margvelashvili will deliver a speech at the plenary session of the Economic Forum and will focus on the importance of deepening political and economic cooperation between the EU and Georgia and the importance of enlargement of the EU.According to the Presidential Administration, after the speech of the President of Georgia, an informal, open discussion will be held.Margvelashvili will hold a bilateral meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda Within the framework of the 27th Economic Forum.The President of Georgia will host the participants of the forum at the Georgian evening in Krynica together with Georgian Ambassador to Poland Ilia Darchiashvili. Georgian products, including Georgian wine, will be exhibited at the evening. A new edition of the Polish translation of the Georgian book The Knight in the Panther’s Skin will also be exhibited at the event.

The Georgian National Statistics Service Saqstat published the data “About Activities of Enterprises” for the second quarter of 2017.Based on the data, the number of people employed in business sector is 631300 people, which is 5% higher than the same data of the corresponding period of 2016. The number of people employed in business sector in the first quarter was 605 thousand. The 36,5% share of the total number of employed people comes on the large businesses, 22, 5% - medium size, while 41% - small businesses. The average salary in business sector is estimated to be 1106, 9 GEL.

The number of international travelers exceeded one million in August, - Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development reports. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia provided information about international visitors to the National Tourism Administration, according to which, 1,080,449 international travelers visited Georgia in August 2017, which is 232,068 more than the figure in the same period of the previous year (growth +27.4%). The number of foreign travelers, or tourists, who spent 24 hours and more in Georgia, reached 573,368 in August, which is 122,721 more than the corresponding figure of 2016 (growth + 27.2%).According to the data, unprecedented number of international travelers was observed during the summer season. As of June and August, 2,729,429 international travelers visited Georgia, which is 597,527 more compared to the summer season of last year (growth + 28.7%). as for the number of foreign travelers, or tourists who spend 24 hours or more in Georgia, reached 1,421,031 during the summer season, which is 350,168 more than the relevant figure of the June-August period of last year (growth + 32.7%).As of January-August 2017, 5,059,106 international travelers visited Georgia, which is 804,263 more than the figure of the same period of the previous year (growth - 18.9%).In January-August, the largest number of visitors arrived from Azerbaijan (+ 10.4%), Armenia (+ 16.8%), Russia (+ 33.9%), Turkey (-6,6%) and Iran (+ 141.9%). The positive trend is maintained from the EU countries: Netherlands + 38%, Germany + 32%, United Kingdom + 31% and France + 29%. Special growth was observed from the following countries: Saudi Arabia - 196%, Kuwait + 178%, Iran + 142% and India + 99%.
Electricity Import exceeds export in August

Import of electric power exceeded export in August, 2017. Electricity System Commercial Operator (ESCO) reports that import was carried out from Russia and Azerbaijan in the amount of 71.47 million kilowatt-hour.Electricity was exported to Armenia and Turkey. The amount of export is estimated at 31.76 million kilowatt-hour. Both export and import are increased in comparison to 2016.

Today, the executive director of the National Bank of Georgia, Giorgi Melashvili hosted the representatives of media in the National Bank of Georgia's Cash Centre and provided detailed information on the upgraded 5 Lari banknotes.Original and well-known Lari banknote themes have been preserved on upgraded banknotes: the front side features Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University building as well as Ivane Javakhishvili's portrait in improved relief quality and volume; the backside features Niko Pirosmani's paintings "A Fisherman in a Red Shirt" and "Threshing", as well as the Coat of Arms of Georgia has been.The upgraded 5 Lari banknote is protected with modern and high technological security features that, at the same time, are easily intelligible to users. Furthermore, the banknotes still have the special improved features for visually impaired people. The upgraded banknotes are made with special materials and security mechanisms that make them robust against contamination and natural wear-and-tear.For information, please be reminded that the upgraded 20 and 50 Lari banknotes have been issued in circulation since February 1st, 2016 and the upgraded 100 Lari banknotes - since November 1st, 2016.The upgraded banknotes in denomination of 10 lari will be issued later, on which the public will be informed accordingly, National Bank of Georgia says.
