Budget of Defense Ministry to be increased by 10 million GEL

The funding allocated for Defense Ministry from the state budget has increased with 10 million and will reach 680 million next year, - Georgia's Defense Minister Levan Izoria claims. Izoriahas responded to information on the ministry budget reduction with this comment. “The project you mean was considered for purchase of anti-missile systems for 4 years. Its funding expired, but the budgetary sum for the Defense Ministry has increased, reaching 680 million. Therefore, we meet and increase the NATO standard on allocation of 2% of GDP for the defense budget. We will also meet an important NATO standard on focusing 15-20% of the defense budget on armament in the future,” Izoria stated.

31st battalion arrives in Afghanistan on peacekeeping mission

The 31st battalion of Third Infantry Brigade of Georgian Armed Forces arrived in Afghanistan on a peacekeeping mission. The Georgian soldiers will replace military personnel of the 23rd battalion on rotation principle and will serve at Bagram Airfield in Resolute Support Program during 6 months.

The memorial of Georgian soldiers Vasil Kuljanashvili and Mdinari Bebiashvili killed at Bagram air base in Afghanistan was unveiled in today. Beka Ambroladze, head of 23rd battalion of Second Infantry Brigade and the battalion staff commemorated to the peacekeepers. American and Czech military officers also attended the ceremony.

The Georgia’s Ministry of Defence released an official statement regarding the Georgian serviceman, who was inured in Afghanistan.According to statement Georgian military serviceman Zaur Komakhidze, involved in the Resolute Support mission has been injured as a result of explosion. ‘Military serviceman of the infantry battalion of the 23rd infantry brigade Corporal Zaur Komakhidze has been injured as a result of the recent blast 5 kms afar from the Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. Soft traumas are observed. His health is not under any threat. The injured has been hospitalized for all necessary medical examinations. He will be discharged tomorrow,’ reads the statement.

The multinational military exercise Noble Partner 2017 has come to an end. The demonstration exercise was held at Vaziani firing range. Military servicemen from NATO member and partner countries participated in the training. Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, Defense Minister Levan Izoria, Head of General Staff Vladimer Chachibaia, U.S. Army G3 Head, Brigade General Timothy Doherty and representatives of diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia attended the ceremony. “Strength through Partnership” is the core message of multinational exercise Noble Partner 2017, which was hosted by Georgia for the third time.Noble Partner 2017 aimed to improve skills in stability and combat operations, increase the interoperability of the United States, Great Britain, Georgia and partner countries, increase combat capabilities of the NATO Response Force (NRF) and interoperability of its units.This time, the exercise was conducted in the largest scale and involved eight NATO member and partner countries: Georgia, USA, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Turkey, Slovenia, Armenia and Ukraine. The active phase of Noble Partner 2017 will be concluded with demonstrative exercise at the 11th shooting range in Vaziani on the 12th of August.

The closing ceremony of international military training Noble Partner – 2017 was held at Vaziani military base. President Giorgi Margvelashvili and Defense Minister Levan Izoria attended the ceremony. Invited guests paid tribute to the memory of soldiers, who died while performance of their duties with observing the minute of silence. Soldiers from US, Georgia and six other countries undergone through the training together. The third Noble Partner exercises began on July 30. The annual U.S. Army Europe-led exercise was hosted by Vaziani and Camp Norio training areas in Georgia. Armenia, Germany, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom also participated. The goal of Noble Partner 2017 is to support the training, evaluation and eventual certification of Georgia’s second light infantry company contribution to the NATO Response Force (NRF) for 2017. Although Georgia is not a member of NATO, it and other NATO partners voluntarily contribute to the NRF.

Body of Georgian soldier killed in Afghanistan repatriated to Georgia - Mourning ceremony at the airport

The body of Georgian soldier, Junior Sergeant Mdinari Bebiashvili, 25, who was killed during the attack on Bagram airfield in Afghanistan, has been repatriated to Georgia today. A special flight of the US Air Force brought the body of a killed soldier.  Mourning ceremony was held at the airport. The representatives of the government and citizens were present at the airport during the repatriation ceremony. The body of Georgian soldier will be transferred to his native village -Martotubani. Bebiashvili is the 32nd Georgian soldier killed during performance of his duties. This was the third peaceful mission for the Georgian soldier. He had served in Georgian Armed Forces since 2010. Bebiashvili has been killed in an attack during joint motorized patrolling in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Three military servicemen of the Georgian Armed Forces, participating in the Resolute Support mission, were also injured in the attack.

The health condition of 2 Georgian soldiers injured in an attack on Bagram airfield in Afghanistan is satisfactory. They were operated on at hospital of the military base and will continue medical treatment in Germany.
