Orthodox Church celebrates Assumption of Virgin Mary on August 28

The Georgian Orthodox Church as well as the whole Orthodox Christendom celebrates Assumption of Virgin Mary on August 28. St. Mary’s day is a great holiday after Trinity Day in Orthodox World. Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II is conducting Divine Liturgy at the Sioni Cathedral.The Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili, representatives of the executive and legislative authorities are attending the Liturgy. Three St. Mary’s days from the twelve great holidays are marked- birth, Assumption (preparing for holiday with feast) and Taking St. Mary to temple. These days are dedicated to St. Mary. Feast day for Assumption of Virgin Mary launches on August 14 and ends on August 28. Georgia is St. Mary’s country and day of Assumption of Mary is always a big holiday for Georgians.

U.S. Department of State releases report on freedom of religion and situation in Georgia

The constitution provides for “complete freedom of religion,” separation of church and state, and equality for all regardless of religion. It prohibits persecution on the basis of religion. Laws and policies grant the Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC) privileges not accorded to any other religious group, including legal immunity for the GOC Patriarch and a consultative role in education. During the year, the government investigated 19 cases involving alleged crimes committed on the basis of religious intolerance, - reads the U.S. Religious Freedom report that also refers to Georgia.‘Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and the Public Defender’s Office (PDO) reported a lack of effective investigations into crimes motivated by religious hatred remained a major problem,’ the report says.According to the report, the government announced the opening of the first Muslim prayer house for members of the armed forces, but only the GOC continued to have chapels in prisons.‘NGOs and minority religious groups also expressed continued concern over what they said was favoritism towards the GOC in the restitution of buildings confiscated by the state in the Soviet era, and said the government continued inadequately to address acts of religious intolerance and discrimination in favor of the GOC in public schools,’ the document reads.As the report says, there were reports of violence against religious minorities. Jehovah’s Witnesses reported 11 physical assaults on its members.‘The U.S. Ambassador and embassy officers continued to meet regularly with senior government officials, including SARI leadership, the prime minister’s adviser for human rights and gender equality, and the president’s adviser for minority issues, to encourage dialogue between the government and minority religious groups,’ the report remarks.

Christendom world Celebrates Easter. According to Christian scripture, Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion on Easter Sunday.Festive liturgies on this occasion were held at all active churches across Georgia last night. The divine church service began at St. Trinity temple at 11 PM and was conducted by Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II. The Easter Epistle of the Patriarch was then read out. The believers were celebrating Easter during the whole night. The Holy Fire that came down from Christ’s Sepulture in Jerusalem, was brought to Tbilisi late last night.

Twenty-five kilometers away from Tbilisi, the church service will be conducted at Kanda village temple in Georgian-Aramaic language. People from various regions of Georgia and other countries are expected to arrive to attend the service. Chkondidi Mitorpolit Petre Tsaava dismissed from the post of Patriarchate’s television head

Chkondidi Mitorpolit Petre Tsaava will no longer be the head of the television of the Patriarchate. As the Metropolitan told reporters, the Holy Synod made the regarding decision. “I have been dismissed as the head of the TV channel. As I have always said I prefer being punished for the truth rather than being acquitted with a lie”, - he said.According to him, during the Synod session he was reprimanded due to his recent statements. "Unfortunately, it turned out that the main topic was related to me. I think it was biased, as I think there are other problems and my issue should not have been the major topic,"- Mitorpolit Petre said after the Holy Synod session.Mitorpolit Petre also clarified that he will refrain from making any statements in the nearest future.He said he continues to fight for protection of the Patriarch.A Holy Synod session has been held at the Patriarchate of Georgia today. The Georgian Orthodox Church today celebrates the day of forgiveness that is Sunday of Forgiveness. The Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II may arrive at the Sameba (Holy Trinity) Cathedral today evening. The church service is conducted at the Cathedral  for the time being. Patriarch is not attending the prayer. Believers ask forgiveness for their sins to each other before days of Great Lent start. After the Divine Liturgy, congregation and the church workers ask for forgiveness. Great lent starts on February 27 and ends on April 16 by the celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection and Great Easter.

Catholicos Patriarch of Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II has turned 84 today. Birthday activities have been postponed due to health condition of the Patriarch. He remains under care of doctors. Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili wished happy birthday to the Patriarch. "I wish happy birthday with the greatest love and respect to His Holiness, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II.His entire career and life is dedicated to the service of the nation and homeland. Georgia is hosting Head of Catholic Church -- Pope of Rome, Francis I arrived in Georgia earlier today with 2-day visit. Georgia’s President, First Lady, Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, Chairman of Parliament and Tbilisi Mayor hosted Pope of Rome at Tbilisi International Airport. Pope of Rome held the first meeting with Georgia’s President Giorgi Margvelashvili at Presidential Residence. “Catholic church wants to contribute to Georgia’s welfare and peace,” Pope of Rome said in his address. Head of Catholic church then met with Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia at the Georgian Patriarchate. Ilia II talked about Georgia’s occupied regions, outcomes of 2008 Georgian-Russian war and IDPs. Pope Francis called on believers for being patient and for uniting forces in fight against discord and violence. Pope Francis is scheduled to hold meetings with Georgian authorities, members of civil society and diplomatic corps.On the second day of the visit Pope Francis will hold a liturgy at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi's Vake district before leaving for Mtskheta, an ancient town near the capital city to see the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.The Pope will leave Georgia on October 2 and travel to Azerbaijan's capital Baku. This will be the second time when Pope has visited Georgia. Pope John Paul II visited Tbilisi in 1999.

Francis is the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere and the first non-European pope since the Syrian Gregory III, who died in 741.Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bergoglio worked briefly as a chemical technologist and nightclub bouncer  before beginning seminary studies. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1969, and from 1973 to 1979 was Argentina's provincial superior of the Society of Jesus. He was accused of handing two priests to the National Reorganization Process during the Dirty War, but the lawsuit was ultimately dismissed. He became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, and was created a cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II. He led the Argentine Church during the December 2001 riots in Argentina, and the administrations of Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner considered him a political rival. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on 28 February 2013, a papal conclave elected Bergoglio as his successor on 13 March.
