Measures taken by the Prosecutor's Office put the accused in unequal conditions – GYLA

Publish Time 2017-02-17 12:56:00

The Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) calls on Chief Prosecutor's Office to lift the restrictions imposed into case of Archpriest Giorgi Mamaladze.

According to the statement of GYLA, Giorgi Mamaladze, arrested for preparation of a premeditated murder, has not been given an opportunity to express his opinion publicly.

According to the organization, even though the law authorizes the Prosecutor's Office to oblige parties not to disclose case materials, this mechanism cannot be used against the interests of the detained person.

"In this case, it is clear that the measures taken by the Prosecutor's Office put the accused apparently in unequal conditions. On the one hand, the Prosecutor's Office openly talks about the different circumstances of the case, and on the other hand, Prosecutor's Office and his lawyers cannot respond to the accusations publicly.

In addition, officials continue making public statements, the contents of which violate the presumption of innocence. We appeal to the Prosecutor's Office to lift the restrictions imposed on the defense; Also, we call on the Prosecutor's Office and the Interior Ministry to take appropriate measures to protect the safety of Giorgi Mamaladze’s family members,” says the statement.
