Death of four miners triggers tightening of labor security measures


Fatal incident or violation of security norms - Death of four miners in Tkibuli town last night triggered launch of discussions about tightening of control and measures on labor security norms in Georgia. The issue of Labor Security will be discussed during the next governmental sitting. Civil activists plan holding of large-scale protests. 

The statistics about those deceased in Georgia during performance of their duties in mines is alarming. Based on the latest data, 24 people died and 19 were injured in mines of Tkibuli after 2010. 

Representatives of Trade Unions and students representing Auditorium 115 of Tbilisi State University held a protest regarding the rate of fatality in front of parliament building and governmental chancellery in Tbilisi. Trade Unions have been urging the government for talking the issue for many years.

Labor Inspection will become obligatory in Georgia – Roman Kakulia, Chairman of the Parliamentary Branch Economy and Economic Policy Committee claims. According to Kakulia, work on the draft-project is already launched at Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs. Initiation of the changes is expected during the spring session in the nearest future. The parliament will consider the draft-bill in a speedily manner. 

Four miners died at Mindeli mine in Tkibuli town yesterday evening. Bodies of the deceased miners were recovered after 13-hour-long efforts. An elevator carrying the four miners fell deep into the mine.  Patrol Police, Rescue and Emergency brigades were mobilized at the scene. Investigation is opened into the tragic accident. The corpses of deceased miners are subjected to medical autopsy in Kutaisi city, Imereti region.

President Giorgi Margvelashvili and Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili commented about the fatal incident. Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili offered condolence to families of the deceased miners.
