Independence Day is celebrated in Georgia on May 26. Georgia has been marking the day of restoration independence for 26 years since following the fall of the Soviet Union.

After Georgia's declaration of independence on 9 April 1991, the government set on 26 May 1991 Georgia's first presidential election, which was won by Zviad Gamsakhurdia. It commemorates the 26 May 1918 adoption of the Act of Independence, which established the Democratic Republic of Georgia in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917.

This year activities organized on the occasion of Georgia’s Independence Day were also dedicated to the 850th jubilee of Shota Rustaveli and his poem “Knight in the Panther’s Skin.” All events responded to the concept “I am from country of Rustaveli.”

Solemn activities were held throughout the day both in Tbilisi and different regions of Georgia. The epicenters of main activities in Tbilisi were Rustaveli Avenue and Liberty Square. More than 300 newly-summoned military servicemen took oath at Liberty Square today. Ministries were represented with their pavilions.

Celebrative activities took place in different cities. Georgia received congratulation messages from world leaders.

A gala concert with participation of pop and opera singers and National Symphonic Orchestra will wrap up the solemn activities. The concert at Rose Square will begin at 21:00.
