Russia’s Putin becomes target of criticism for his visit in occupied Abkhazia

Russian President Vladimir Putin has become the target of criticism for his visit in Georgia’s one of two occupied regions of Abkhazia on the 9th anniversary of August 2008 Georgia-Russia war. Official Tbilisi evaluates the meeting of Russian President with Raul Khajimba, de-facto leader of Abkhazia as continuation of Kremlin’s occupation policy and harsh violation of international norms.

Ketevan Tsikhelashvili, State Minister of Reconciliation and Civil Equity condemns Putin’s visit to occupied Abkhazia. Political analysts talk about possible reasons about Putin’s Abkhazian visit. They believe that Putin sent provocative message to the international community with his Abkhazian visit.

Tengiz Pkhaladze, Advisor to President of Georgia for Foreign Relations Issues evaluates the visit of Russian President to Abkhazia as an attempt to legitimize illegal move. According to Pkhaladze, Georgia won the struggle of non-recognition policy on an international arena.

The ruling team describes the visit as Putin’s demonstration of power and violation of international norms. The opposition criticizes the government for making weak statements.

In parallel to voicing criticism in address to the Russian government, Russia is forced to fulfill internationally taken obligations and enforce the resolution of European Court of Human Rights.

According to the information reported by Article 42 of Constitution, NGO, the Russian authorities issued the compensation to Georgian citizen Lia Shioshvili deported from Russian Federation in 2006 in the amount of 30 thousand Euro. Strasbourg Court recognized more than 20 people as victims of deportation.
