Funeral procession held after 24 years – The 25 bodies of Georgian heroes transferred from the occupied Abkhazia region were buried with military honor earlier today. Bodies of 20 people were buried at Digomi Brothers’ Cemetery; four people were buried at family graves; the 5th body of Colonel Mamia Alasania was put to rest in the courtyard of St. Nicolas Church at Narikala Fortress.

The bodies have been missing since 1992-93 military hostilities and Fall of Sokhumi. The Ministry of IDPs and Settlement earlier published the names and surnames of the identified bodies.

Civil funeral was held at Sameba (Holy Trinity) Cathedral in Tbilisi. Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II gave the Paraclys. Governmental members and ordinary citizens attended the service.

Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili made a statement about application to President about presenting the heroes for Vakhtang Gorgasali Order. The list is already sent to Presidential Administration.

President Giorgi Margvelashvili thanked everyone who mediated in repatriation of bodies and expressed condolence to the families. President released a statement in that regard.

The bodies were discovered in a grave of Iashtukha village, north-eastern outskirts of Sokhumi of the occupied Abkhazian region. The 325 corpses of those, who died during the military hostilities, were discovered through involvement of the International Committee of Red Cross after 2010.
