Georgian Olympic delegation returned to Georgia from Rio. Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs and fans greeted the Georgian athletes at Tbilisi International Airport.Georgian delegation has earned 7 medals during the Rio Olympic games: two gold, one silver and four bronze.  By earning 7 medals, the result of the Georgian delegation can be considered as one of the most successful. The gold medals were won by Vladimer Khinchegashvili in the freestyle wrestling and Lasha Talakhadze in weightlifting. Varlam Liparteliani took silver in judo. Bronzes were earned by Irakli Turmanidze in weightlifting, Lasha Shavdatuashvili in judo, Shmagi Bolkvadze in Greco-Roman wrestling and Geno Petriashvili in freestyle wrestling.

Georgian free-style wrestler Geno Petriashvili won Bronze Medal at Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Petriashvili, competing in 120-kilogram weight category, fought against  rival from United States and defeated with 10:0.At this time, the Georgian delegation has earned 7 medals: two golds, one silver and four bronzes. 

Georgian free-style wrestler Geno Petriashvili will struggle for Bronze Medal at Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games tonight. Petriashvili, competing in 120-kilogram weight category, fought in quarter semi-final and lost to Iranian rival with equal scores. However, Iranian wrestler has qualified for the final and now the Georgian sportsman has the right to struggle for the third place. 

Georgian weightlifter 22-year-old Lasha Talakhadze won Gold Medal in +105 kg category at Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Talakhadze set the record in the over 105-kilogram weightlifting division with 473 total kilos to win the gold medal in a surprising upset over the heavily favored Behdad Salimi of Iran. Talakhadze lifted 215 kilos on the snatch and 258 on the clean and jerk to set the new mark. Gor Minasyan of Armenia won silver and Georgia's Irakli Turmanidze took home the bronze.  At this time, the Georgian delegation has earned 5 medals: one gold, one silver and three bronzes. Thus, Georgia is sharing the 40th place with Ethiopia. 

Tariel Khechikashvili, Georgian Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs being in Rio de Janeiro with an official visit, met with Leonardo Picciani, Brazil’s Sports Minister. During the meeting held on the sidelines of Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games, the ministers talked about future cooperation plans and signing of memorandum which will take place during the visit of Picciani in Georgia by the end of 2016. 

A suspicious bag was discovered outside the hotel of Rio de Janeiro where Tariel Khechikashvili, Georgian Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs and his deputy are currently accommodated, this morning. Mobilization of law-enforcers became necessary under the background of ongoing sports competitions. The explosion was heard. It became known later that it was a false alarm. De-miners were called to inspect the bag and it was destroyed as a result. Representatives of Rescue Service and Police worked at site as well.The minister said in a phone interview with “Moambe” News Program of First Channel that security measures are reinforced in Rio due to ongoing 2016 Summer Olympic Games. 

Georgian judo wrestler Varlam Liparteliani has qualified for the semi-final at Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The Olympic champion of 2014 competing in the 90-kilogram-weight category defeated his rival from Mongolia.

A bus carrying journalists between Olympic venues in Rio de Janeiro has had two windows smashed, after stones were thrown at it on Tuesday evening.There was initial alarm when it was thought the damage was caused by gunfire. A few of the dozen people on board suffered minor cuts, BBC reports.The bus was travelling between the Deodoro hockey venue and the main press centre at Barra da Tijuca. "There was a popping, cracking noise," said a photographer from the UK's Press Association. "The bus didn't come to a stop but paused. Everyone was on the floor so I got on the floor as well."A police escort quickly arrived and accompanied the bus back to the press centre. "The two windows did not shatter immediately but one of them shattered as we drove along the motorway," the photographer added. It is unknown who threw the stones at the bus. 

Avtandil Chrikishvili, a member of Georgian judo wrestling team, has qualified for semi-final at Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games. He won another success after judoka Lasha Shavdatuashvili. Chrikishvili defeated Italian rival. He is competing in the 81-kilogram weigh category. 

Georgian judo wrestler Lasha Shavdatuashvili won the bronze medal in Rio Olympic Games yesterday, defeating on the way to the third-game match a Russian Denis Yartsev. Yartsev was winning the game at the beginning, though finally Lasha Shavdatuashvili managed to beat him. After the decisive move, the Georgian athlete pointed to a Georgian flag with an emotional gesture as the win came on the 8th anniversary of Russia-Georgia war.Shavdatuashvili then went on to defeat an Israeli athlete, to take the third place in his weight category.  

Lasha Shavdatuashvili, Georgian judo wrestler won Bronze medal at Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The 24-year-old sportsman defeated his Israeli rival.  

The President and the First Lady supported Georgian athletes participating in the Olympic Games. Giorgi Margvelashvili and Maka Chichua have visited the Olympic Village in Rio de Janeiro, met the athletes and wished them success.President and the First Lady attended the opening ceremony of 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. During the visit, bilateral meetings with the government representatives were held, the main objective of the meetings was supporting the policy of non-recognition.The visit of Georgia’s president to Brazil has already ended.

The 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro have officially opened with a flamboyant ceremony celebrating Brazil’s history and cultural diversity, all to the pulsating beat of samba, bossa nova and funk.Marathon runner Vanderlei Cordeiro, who was denied victory at the 2004 Athens Games when he was attacked by a spectator, lit the cauldron on Friday after an exuberant show of Brazilian cultural touchstones and breathtaking fireworks.The Games, the first ever to be held in South America, were declared open by Michel Temer, Brazil's interim president. The Rio show dazzled with light effects, colourful costumes, singing, dancing, drumming and fireworks as the audience was taken on a journey through Brazil's history and its diversity, Al Jazeera reported.

The President and the First Lady have visited the Olympic Village in Rio de Janeiro. Giorgi Margvelashvili and Maka Chichua met the athletes participating in the Olympic Games and wished them success.The athletes thanked Margvelashvili for attending the Olympic Games and supporting them. "You can see that the Georgian flag has been erected in Rio. This is heartwarming for all Georgians. Forty Georgian athletes arrived here. I am sure that the Georgian flag will be erected many times in Rio. I want to thank all who work now in Rio: athletes, doctors, organizing group and journalists", - said the President.Margvelashvili met with his French counterpart François Hollande in the Olympic Village. The leader of France wished good luck to Georgian athletes. After the meeting with the Olympians, the President and the First Lady dined together with the athletes in the Olympic Village.
