Is there threat of Zika virus spread in Georgia?

Paata Imnadze, Head of the National Center for Disease Control, said that a mosquito, transmitting Zika virus, has been seen twice in Georgia for the last 60 years.

Imnadze claims that the risk of Zika spreading in Georgia is low, as "people from South America do not frequently arrive in Georgia."

He said the mosquito was first seen in Georgia two years ago, while for the second time it was seen last year. "We are constantly checking the situation in this regard. The mosquitoes were found in the suburbs of Batumi and Zugdidi. I want to underline that there were not inside the cities," Imnaidze said. As for preventive measures, Imnadze said we must refrain from travelling to Brazil or use special medication against the mosquito.
