Vast majority of 11 million illegal immigrants in US subject to deportation

Publish Time 2017-02-22 10:09:00 Update Time 2017-02-22 12:50:00

The vast majority of the 11 million illegal immigrants living in the US are at risk of deportation under new guidelines released on Tuesday by the Trump administration.

Under Barack Obama, the department of homeland security only targeted people who had been convicted of serious crimes or were considered threats to national security for deportation.

President Donald Trump has broadened the criteria to include any illegal immigrant who is even suspected of a crime, in addition to those who have been charged or convicted. The crime in question need not be serious- even those suspected of traffic violations could be targeted for deportation.

While the administration says those accused of crimes will be "the first to go", nearly all of the 11 million illegal immigrants residing in the US are now at risk of immediate deportation, The Telegraph reports.
