UN discussed situation in Georgia’s occupied regions

Tags:UN

Round table format meeting was held at the UN head office. The human rights and security related developments in Georgia’s occupied regions were discussed during the meeting.

The participants discussed the situation in the occupied territories of Georgia after 9 years of Russian occupation.

Georgia’s Permanent Representative to the UN provided the event attendants with updated information on the situation and latest developments in Georgia’s occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali.

“Within the framework of the discussion, situation in terms of human rights and security at Georgia’s occupied territories has been focused on as well as systematic and rough violation of Georgian citizens’ rights in the region. Concern was expressed over illegal installation of barbed wire and so-called border demarcation banners along the occupation line and closed-down checkpoints that significantly restrict the right of the population to travel freely.

Restrictions in terms of education in mother tongue have also been stressed. Such actions restricts fundamental human rights and significantly damages security environment at the scene, undermining Georgia’s efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully,” -  the statement reads.
