TSU 100-year anniversary to be held in 2018 under UNESCO aegis

The 100-year anniversary of Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University (TSU) will be held in 2018 under the aegis of UNESCO. The UN Education, Science and Culture organization has made the decision with support of the friend countries at the 39th session.UNESCO has been involved in marking historic events for the organization members since 1956. The special governmental commission has been established for holding events in relation to the anniversary. The events are to be planned at local as well as international level. Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili is the commission head. The commission also includes members of the Cabinet, Parliament, Georgia’s Orthodox Church and National Academy of Scientists.The celebratory events will begin in December 2017 and last during the year of 2018. The first national university in Caucasus was opened on January 26 (February 8, according to new calendar), 1918.

CEC to issue summarizing protocols of local elections

A sitting begins at Georgian Central Election Commission (CEC). Tamar Zhvania, Chairperson of CEC will issue summarizing protocols of October 21 local self-governance elections. The second-round of local elections will be held on November 12. The district election commission has issued a summary protocol on the mayoral elections of Tianeti. According to the protocol, the decision of the Court of Appeals was upheld and Tamaz Mechiauri was declared as the winner of the elections. The candidate of Georgian Dream is going to appeal against the decision in the court.

President of Estonia continues visit in Georgia

Kersti Kaljulaid, President of Estonia continues her 3-day visit in Georgia. Kaljulaid will lay wreath at the Memorial of Heroes who died in fight of territorial integrity. She will then visit IDPs. Businesspersons are in the Estonian delegation besides representatives of executive authorities. The visit is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Estonia.

New regulation on video penalties takes effect tomorrow

A new regulation on video penalties will take effect starting November 1, and the so-called smart cameras will also start functioning that will reflect different administrative violations by means of the programs established at the joint operations center.As Georgia’s Interior Ministry informs, special information booklets were prepared by the ministry and patrol police officers provided drivers in Tbilisi as well as in regions with the booklets. The new regulation on execution of video penalties will take effect throughout Georgia. Up to 3000 smart cameras are planned to set in motion till the end of 2017 across Georgia.

Draft-bill for activation of Pension accumulation system ready

Georgian citizens will have to care about worthy pension age themselves. The pension accumulation system will presumably become activated autumn, 2018 in Georgia, if the parliament approves the draft-bill worked out by representatives of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG) and government. The draft-project is ready and the parliament will have discussed it by the end of this year. Reportedly, involvement of all employed persons under 40 in the system will be obligatory. It will be voluntary for persons above 40 and for everyone else including self-employed citizens. Every person will transfer 2% of salary to the pension fund, employers and government will transfer 2% each. Pension Agency will manage the amount in the fund. In case of a person’s death, the money in his/her fund will be transferred to his/her inheritor. The system was worked out based on recommendations of international organizations and European countries.

Gypsies unable to obtain ID cards in Georgia

Gypsies living in Georgia are willing to have ID documents but are unable to obtain the cards – non-governmental organization Human Rights Development Fund informs. The NGO has been studying living conditions of gypsies for 7 months and reported about results of the research today. Based on official statistics, there are 604 gypsies living in Georgia. However authors of the research claim that the number exceeds 2 thousand.

Life is Wonderful to hold charity concert

Life is Wonderful Charity Foundation will hold a charity concert in support to children diagnosed with cancer, beneficiaries of Monk Andria Fund, at Tbilisi Big Concert Hall on November 1 at 20:00.The money collected from the concert will be transferred to construction of Happy House rehabilitation center where children and their family members will receive free-of-charge medical and psychological assistance. The center will serve 20 people in 24-hour regime. A day center will be also functioning in the premises. The National Ballet Ensemble “Sukhishvilebi,” “Shvidkatsa” Ensemble and Group Goofy Land will take part in the charity concert.

Reason of fatal incident in Mindeli mine remains unknown

The reason of a fatal incident that claimed the life of one miner in Mindeli mine of Tkibuli town, Imereti region, on October 27, remains unknown. A special commission is working in to determine the death causes of the miner. Representatives of Economic and Healthcare Ministries worked at site during the whole night. Land mass keeps collapsing in the mine and extraction works are temporarily suspended.“Geo-Coal GIG” Company released a statement about death of Davit Porchkidze, deceased leading specialist in Mindeli Mine. The company expressed condolence to the family of the deceased miner. Collapse of land mass in the mine is said to have served as reason of the fatal incident according to the company’s statement. However, family members of the deceased miner hint on violation of safety norms. The dead body of the miner is transferred to Kutaisi Morgue. Investigation into the fatal incident is also launched.

Questions over incident at Nutsubidze Plato remain unanswered

Did Patrol Police officers exceed their authorities over the tragic fact that took place at Nutsubidze Plato in Tbilisi on October 25 during which Paata Pavliashvili, 34, died? Many questions circulating over the incident have remained unanswered for the time being.Results of the expertise on corpse of Pavliashvili will become known in about 45 days. Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) does not comment over the incident and says that investigation is being led by Prosecutor’s Office. The family of the deceased man also keeps silence before completion of the ongoing investigation. The tragic fact is also probed into by Georgia’s Public Defender and three non-governmental organizations. Patrol Police officers, who participated in the incident, have already been questioned. Pavliashvili felt bad when law-enforcers were trying to detain him and died before neighbors called First Medical Aid. According to one of the members of the ruling team, there can be recording of cameras attached to patrol police officers during conduction of the detention operation than can serve as evidence. The medical autopsy was conducted in Rustavi town that also caused suspicion. Head of Samkharauli National Forensic Bureau told First Channel that the reason to transfer the corpse to Rustavi was ongoing repair works of an elevator envisaged for lifting dead bodies.

Whether or not the decision of Mtskheta Regional Court regarding the local self- governance elections be complained in Appeals Court will become known in 6 hours.A plaintiff side the International Center for Democracy Initiatives (NGO) believes that they had presented all the arguments and court had to fully satisfy the lawsuit and annul the results of Tianeti #20 polling district. Organization does not rule out to appeal the court’s decision. Tamaz Mechiauri, Leader of “For United Georgia Party” won in Mayoral elections in Tianeti in October 21 local self-governance elections with one vote. Mtskheta Regional Court partially satisfied the lawsuit of International Center of Democratic Initiatives organization yesterday. The decree of Election Constituency, which ascribed void election bulletins to mayoral candidate of ruling Georgian Dream Party, was annulled.
