Statement of James Appathurai on parliamentary elections in Georgia

James Appathurai, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy and NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia released a statement about Georgian parliamentary elections held on October 8.

“I congratulate the people of Georgia on the conduct of the parliamentary elections on 8 October. International observers have assessed that the vote was competitive, well-administered and generally respected fundamental freedoms.

I regret that some incidents of violence took place during the election campaign. I trust that the various complaints which have been launched will be fully assessed by the competent bodies in Georgia. I look forward to working with the new Parliament and Government, once established, to further deepen NATO’s relationship with Georgia,” reads the statement.
