UNSC Calls for 'Measured Response' Over Russian Su-24 Incident

The UK president of the UN Security Council for November on Tuesday said that the downing of a Russian combat plane by a Turkish jet showed the importance of de-confliction and called on everyone involved to de-escalate.

"We're extremely concerned about the incident of the Russian downed jet. We've been in close touch with our Turkish opposite numbers from the Prime Minister down. It's very important that we learn the lessons of this in terms of de-confliction. I call on everyone involved to de-escalate and to be measured in their response", Matthew Rycroft stated, as reported by Sputnik. 

Turkey shot down a Russian warplane near the Syrian border on Tuesday, saying it had repeatedly violated its air space, one of the most serious publicly acknowledged clashes between a NATO member country and Russia for half a century.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the plane had been attacked when it was 1 km (0.62 mile) inside Syria and warned of "serious consequences" for what he termed a stab in the back administered by "the accomplices of terrorists".

"We will never tolerate such crimes like the one committed today," Putin said, as Russian and Turkish shares fell on fears of an escalation between the former Cold War enemies.
